What is eastern red cedar used for ?
Larger cedar logs are principally used for lumber or veneer.
Cedar's legendary resistance to insects, decay, and rot make it an ideal environmentally-friendly lumber for building fences, porches, decks, lining closets, shingles for roofing.
Its beautiful red heartwood makes enduring furniture of stunning beauty. Cedar paneling adds warmth to any room. The rich color and grain patterns of eastern red cedar make it very desireable for hand-made items such as bird decoys, carvings, bird houses. It's also used for aromatic chests, cabinets and pencils.
Smaller cedar trees are usually chipped or ground to make mulch for flower beds as well as bedding for animals. Cedar's natural aromatic oils are said to provide glossy coats on animals and help reduce insect problems. The use of cedar mulch in flower beds helps keep weeds at bay and discourages insects.
And cedarwood oil is used in fragrances that scent room sprays, cleaners, cosmetics and perfume.
